Virginia Redistricting Vote: Protecting Balance in the House

Virginia voters have an important opportunity this year to help protect fair representation in Congress.

In response to aggressive mid-decade redistricting efforts in Texas, Virginia has placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would allow the General Assembly to temporarily update congressional district maps before the next census cycle.

This proposal is designed to ensure that congressional maps reflect voters fairly and help maintain balance in the U.S. House of Representatives at a time when control of Congress is closely contested nationwide.

The change is temporary. The amendment would allow updated districts for the remainder of this decade, but Virginia’s standard redistricting process would resume following the 2030 census.

The measure is part of a broader effort by states to respond to partisan map changes elsewhere and ensure voters instead of political pressure determine representation in Congress.
